Her shoulders ache. So does her upper back. Fingers numb, lips dry and cracked by the cold, she stops and looks at herself in the mirror in the hall of her father's foyer. [break][break]

A wreck.[break][break]

It is a wonder the building still stands. Nearly everything else is a wreck. She flips a switch, not sure what she expected. The lights won't turn on. No heat, either, but a Dewford home was never built for winter. She doesn't pay it any attention. Her fingers would've been numb regardless of whether it was cold.[break][break]

Baki sighs. She can see her breath in the dark. She makes her way to the couch, and buries her head in her hands. [break][break]

How many? [break][break]

They'd said ten so far. Probably more. The rescue efforts would continue into tomorrow. She'd done her best to push herself, til she couldn't stand up anymore. That's when had told her to go home, take care of herself. She had protested, but nobody would listen to her. [break][break]

So home she went.[break][break]

Visions swim behind her eyelids. Bodies buried in snow, or crushed in rubble. A woman, weeping, a name Tsubaki couldn't understand, her head slick with red. A girl huddled in an oversized coat, coughing wildly, and searching for her lost meowth. A man who'd had his arm pinned between debris and a wall, pleading for help. She would never forget the sounds he'd made when they'd managed to move it, and he regained feeling... [break][break]

"... Fuck."[break][break]

She opens her eyes with a start. [break][break]

The room itself is just as dark. But sometimes, seeing anything is worse. Baki curses, jumping to her feet and nearly tripping over a stack of hot rod magazines. They scatter across the floor, and she leaves them, running to the kitchen sink. [break][break]

She coughs, violently. It lasts for nearly a minute before she can catch her breath. She turns on the hot water and washes it away. In the dark she can't see anything, but she knows it's black... [break][break]

"... Get a... fuckin' hold of yourself. You're a Gym Leader."[break][break]

She braces herself against the counter, trying to choke down all her feelings. [break][break]

"Be strong. For them. A Gym Leader's strong. They need you to be strong now."[break][break]

But she wasn't strong. She was just good at putting on a face. She was no hero, not like her father. [break][break]

It is colder in the house than it should be. Heat does not seep in fully until summer. They are all fortunate that Howard chose to attack in Spring, while there’s still time for and to get things cleaned up before the heat. Even still, it is cool. There is a breeze in the house where there shouldn’t be one.[break][break]
The draft seems to swell near a light switch. She is not alone. A hand flicks up a light. Light brings with it a revelation. Hattori, without a Lord to defend, has taken it upon himself to defend Tsubaki, though he does not often make himself known. He’s cast there in the light, clinging to the front of this stranger’s shirt, a kunai in his hand right against the throat.[break][break]
Hattori’s eye shoots wide. He sees who this stranger is, and he lets the kunai fall. In place of steel aggression, the frog clings to his beloved human like a child holding to an adult. Here, with no outsiders to intrude upon them, Hattori is free with his tears. Navy pats the Pokemon on the head and smiles at Tsubaki.[break][break]
“You really should let people in, you know? Otherwise you’re gonna end up like I did when we got tossed in the pen.”

Her staggered breath comes as a cloud before her eyes, trying to register what she's seeing. It takes a moment before she responds, incredulously. [break][break]

"... Just sent you to Ever Grande. Saw you put on that chopper myself. Hope this means you didn't die en route."[break][break]

But he wasn't dead. She knew he wasn't, somehow. [break][break]

Tsubaki inspects him again in silence, ruminating on his words. There is an awful taste in her mouth, and whatever she just washed down the drain isn't the cause. [break][break]

"Old habits die hard, huh?"[break][break]

Letting people in was death overseas. Even that glib response, it was a way of keeping people away. Thorns on a rose. She grimaces, realizing how hard she'd pretended to be realizing someone else was in the room. [break][break]

Even him... [break][break]

"... Ten people. Ten people are dead, Navy. More wounded. The hospital's overflowing, and we're still finding people and pokemon. Granite cave, all the pokemon down there, they're--"[break][break]

She coughs. Again, and again. Hacking til it feels like she's gonna cough up a lung. She doubles over, wiping black on the back of her sleeve as she looks up at him in alarm, shame in her eyes. [break][break]

He wasn't supposed to see her like this. [break][break]

“Woah now.” He is upon her in a heartbeat. A few steady paces and he clears the space between them, standing over his daughter and looking at the viscous black stuff she coughs up. This place and her drive are killing her. All he can think to do his hook an arm around her, pull her close, hug a girl it feels like he hasn’t seen in forever.[break][break]
“I’ve got you. Calm down. You’re so tired you can barely stand up straight.” His eyes find Hattori, looking at them both. “Find her somethin’ cold to drink.” Hattori’s nod is all the assurance Navy needs. He’s gone before the sheriff even turns back to Tsubaki. She’s small. He suspects she will always seem small to him, even if she grows into the woman conjured by Galarian dreams.[break][break]
“There’s only so much you can do in one day. We owe those ten people more than we can ever give ‘em. Them, and all the ones we haven’t found yet. Still can’t beat yourself up over it. We did all we could. Should’ve known Rocket would do it eventually…” There’s guilt in his voice. Howard only did this because Navy allowed him in, opened the gates and practically rolled out the red carpet.[break][break]
“Don’t feel right. Made my oath with Zacian. Still…processing that. I’ve missed you, Baki. Dreamed about you a lot.”

She fusses, trying to stop him, but the effort has her doubled over all over again trying to get the words out. Finally, she does.[break][break]

"H-hot! Somethin' hot, Hattori! Get me... tea..."[break][break]

She's had enough of the cold today.[break][break]

Tsubaki dabs at the corner of her mouth again, looking in her father's eyes. They're so different now. Everything he's gone through shows. While they were never innocent, the way they cut into her now is unlike that man she met in Slateport only a year and a half ago. He's sharper now, like a whetted blade, but his words are soft as ever. [break][break]

She takes the tea from Hattori, and the warmth cleanses the taste of ichor at the back of her throat. Finally, she speaks. Measured, more calm than before. It's like she's back home again, with Navy and his pokemon here. [break][break]

"Zacian... that her name?"[break][break]

It sounds odd, but good. [break][break]

It's the name of a protector, someone who can wield a sword against those who threaten her home. She takes solace in that.[break][break]

"Tell her I said thanks, when you get a chance." [break][break]

All the lives she's mourning aren't forgotten, but it's thanks to her and the others that the number wasn't higher. She owes so much to that mysterious wolf.[break][break]

"You dreaming now, too?"[break][break]

She looks him over once more. Even with all the changes, he feels faint of presence. Like he's both here, and somewhere else. Something in the way his image flickers in the light, but only if you look at it in just the right way. Like the way Tormund's eyes seem to glow, when he's hiding just out of sight in the dark, about to pounce on you. [break][break]

"Bet that's her."[break][break]

She takes another sip of tea to disguise her smile. [break][break]

It's the best cup of tea she's had for as long as she can remember. Hattori must've grabbed the good tea, the kind she'd been saving. The taste reminds her of the matcha she'd brought with her when she had moved to Hoenn. It reminds her of that chance meeting in her room on a voyage from Kanto. She had opened it there, was drinking it when they met. Now it was nearly gone. [break][break]

She giggles uncharacteristically as she looks down at her reflection in it. That makes her feel weird. She suddenly remembers the circumstance of their meeting, and she frowns.[break][break]

From the gloom steps a tall wolf. Her golden eyes are draped in shadow, like her very fur serves as helmet and armor both. She dwarfs Voyager, who trots around her excitedly. He has already decided she is his new friend, rubbing up against her. Zacian hardly acknowledges he is there at all. Uncrowned, Ascalon along her back, she waits for them to step outside and greet her.[break][break]

She gives him a smile, absolutely sure that's not the answer he wants. But it's the only one she can give.[break][break]

When he looks over her shoulder out the window, Tsubaki turns and parts the curtain, glimpsing the shape in the fog. She looks different now than she did on the battlefield, her silhouette slightly more lithe now that she'd doffed the armor she had worn in the fight, but Tsubaki can still tell without a doubt that this is the same warrior that saved them in their moment of need. [break][break]

"She wants to meet me? Why?"[break][break]

She glimpses VoyVoy in the yard, pouring all his affection into the wolf. Tsubaki's just glad it's not her this time. [break][break]

She sets her tea on the counter and gives Hattori a short bow of thanks as she makes her way to the door. The outside air makes her shiver as she approaches the shadow, but she doesn't care. [break][break]

She knows it's just some vestigial physiological response. Some memory ingrained into her body, a reminder that she's meant to be a human being. But the truth is, she hasn't felt hot or cold since the attack earlier today when she doused herself in black. [break][break]

Her tongue briefly tingles, the trace of a burn. It, too, is set aside as she walks into the mist.[break][break]

Navy is just a few steps behind Tsubaki. Zacian stands there, solemn. Her eyes fall upon Tsubaki and make no secret of the hero’s shock. All Zacian can do is step forward, dip her head, and press it against Tsubaki. Her fur is warm, thick, smooth as silk. Its surface is broken by scars. Even now, Zaria that was cannot escape her scars.[break][break]

She remembers the reverence she held for the hero long ago, along with everyone else in that alternate Galar. A reverence she denied at first, but had come to know intimately in their time of need. She feels the weight of the wolf's head as it rests against hers. The cold of her nose, the heat of her breath. She reaches out tentatively, and strokes her mane. [break][break]

But something troubles her all the same.[break][break]

"Do you... know me, girl?"[break][break]

That look in her eyes was as familiar as the look in Sumire's when the giant snake gazed at her master in adoration. It even lacked the dangerous possessiveness of her treasured arbok, exchanging it for a more tender, gentle expression as if she had waited a lifetime to see her.[break][break]

Tsubaki frowns. [break][break]

"'Heroes must return to slay giants', was it?" [break][break]

She repeats the words the drake had uttered when it split the earth, and she realizes.[break][break]

This is not a family get-together, Navy bringing home Tsubaki's new younger sister. They're in this to fight. Together. They're meeting for the sake of whatever battle is yet to come.[break][break]

She turns her head to face Navy, the warmth of the reunion turned cold once again. Snow begins to fall around them, a reminder of the battle, of Tsubaki's failure to protect Dewford as its Gym Leader.[break][break]
